VH3 950th - 18 to 20 May 2001 - The Mad Cow Hash

Our 950th run will be at Trattenbach, which is 10km south of Gloggnitz, in the Semmering Area, which is about an hours drive, south of Vienna. Its up in the mountains, and there are trails, viewing points, and for the weaker hearted, Lifts in plenty.

The theme for the run will be the Mad Cow. Austria is one of the countries in Europe which is still trying to determine how badly it is affected by the Mad Cow Disease (BSE or Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy) and its human equivalent - variant Creutzfeldt Jakob (vCJD). Research has been centered in the rural areas but there are lingering reports of seemingly "mad" animals with horns and bells "hoofing" through the streets of Vienna on weekly occasions. This weekend discover a new variant, Drunken Hasher Disease or HSE (Hasher Spongiform Encephalopathy).

Join us in seeing how much of the local livestock we can drive mad!

We have booked the entire Hubertushof Gasthof, with 50 beds. There is also an adjoining Pension, if the demand is greater than 50. If that Pension is full, then we will get a further Gasthof and provide transport on Saturday night to and from that Gasthof. The main Gasthof has a restaurant/party room for 130 people, which should be sufficient. Allocation of people to the Gasthof or Pension will be according to booking order. The general plan for the weekend is:

WARM-UP! Thursday, 17 May 2001.

While not part of the official weekend events, we would not want anyone that arrives early to miss out on a night on the town in Vienna. Hence, there will be a Pub Crawl in Vienna on Thursday night for anyone who arrives early enough. This will be organised by Minuteman (Mike Ehinger). Crash space will be available in Vienna for that night. Contact Minuteman for more information.

The first On Set of HSE - Friday, 18 May 2001 - 6 p.m.

We expect most people will make their own way from Vienna to Trattenbach during the day. (Lots of time for the pub crawlers to recover!) See below for details about transportation. There will be a short warm-up run at 6 p.m. sharp! This will be followed by dinner at 8 p.m. The goody bag will be handed out and cash will be collected from any late registrations.

The Main Event - Saturday, 19 May 2001 - 12 noon

Breakfast: 9 to 10 a.m.

Tobogganing: For anyone who gets up early on Saturday, there is an opportunity to go tobogganing in Sankt Corona before the run.

Directions: Drive back through Ottertal, proceeding on the main road to Kirchberg (ie don't turn left to Glognitz). Upon reaching Kirchberg, turn left to St Corona, where you drive up the hill. Park at the bottom of the chair lift, on the right hand side of the road. The distance is 10 km and the journey takes less than 15 minutes. A single toboggan run costs 70 ATS and is just less than 1 km in length.

Note: This only runs in dry conditions - we will phone beforehand to make sure that the tobogganning is operating. Those interested could go at 10 a.m. on Saturday, and finish tobogganning at 11.30 to be back in time for the Hash. Please don't be late for the run.

The Mad Cow Run will start at 12 noon. This allows plenty of time for beer stops, enjoying the countryside, many down-downs, and recovery time before the evening activities. There will be snacks after the run.

In the evening, we have the Mad Hasher Ball starting at 7.30 p.m. There will be a buffet, with music, dancing etc. Please think about a skit you and your Hash can perform which fits the Mad Cow theme. Everyone is expected to wear something which makes them look like a Cow, preferably slightly mad. This should be easy for Hashers. There will also be a Tombola, so bring something a bit Mad to donate.

The Recovery - Sunday, 20 May 2001 - 11 a.m.

Breakfast: 9 to 10 a.m. followed by the Recovery Run at 11 a.m.

There will be a short hang-over run, with farewell down-downs and optional lunch. Please note that lunch is not included in the run fee.

Transportation Details

We recommend that Hashers make their own way to Trattenbach by car or train. There will be a limited amount of space in VH3 cars, but you will not be able to choose the time you travel from Vienna to Trattenbach. Please contact Norman "Stormin Norman" Randall if you need a lift.

By Car :- From Vienna take the A2 Südautobahn and at the Knoten Seebenstein (after Wiener Neustadt) follow the S6 to Gloggnitz. Map showing route from Vienna to Gloggnitz.

600 metres after leaving the S6 at Glognitz, turn left towards the B17 and after a further 800 metres, turn left again. Now proceed 3.4 km to Ottertal, where you turn right towards Trattenbach. After 1km (at Anger) turn left off the road into the large Hubertushof Carpark. Careful - Anger is 2 km before the main village of Trattenbach. Map showing route from Gloggnitz to Trattenbach.

This is 95 km from Vienna and should take about 1 hour 20 minutes, if traffic cooperates.

By Train :- From Vienna take the Train from the Südbahnhof to Gloggnitz using this timetable. Some of the trains require you to change in Wiener Neustadt. The train takes between one hour and one hour 20 minutes. When you get to Gloggnitz, call Stormin' Norman on +43-699-1202-8278 and he will arrange for you to be picked up.

Accommodation and Special Dietary Details

If you have special requests as to whom you sleep with please let us know (of course, we may check with the other party to make sure they agree to this arrangement!). There are a few single rooms, which cost extra, first come, first served. If you have any special dietary requirements (e.g. vegetarian) let us know. All arrangements for rooms are being handled by Norman "Stormin Norman" Randall . Contact him after you register.
